The Coming Conservative Platform Fight
Published by Rod D. Martin January 24th, 2008 filed under Conservatism, GOP, Election 2008, Rod D. Martin, TheVanguard.Org
Phyllis Schlafly has long contended that nothing matters so much as the Republican Platform Committee, and never is that likely to be so true as in 2008. Here’s why.

GOP v. Roe

No matter which Republican ends up facing Hillary or Obama this fall, count on that person to be the abortion establishment’s worst nightmare.
But wait a second, you say. Of the four leading GOP candidates, only one of them, Mike Huckabee, is both a longtime and a passionate pro-lifer. Mitt Romney appears ardent on the issue, but he’s a relatively recent convert. John McCain has never supported the pro-abortion position, but has historically lacked passion on the matter. And Rudy Giuliani remains unapologetically pro-choice.
So what is the extremist left — the supporters of abortion any time, any place, for any reason — so worried about? (continue reading post »)

Arms Length Conservatism

Jim Antle of The American Spectator makes the case that it could be good for the conservative movement to have a Republican nominee (he suggests McCain or Huckabee) who is allied to them but not one of them. It’s an interesting read.

When Hillary Clinton pointedly refused to criticize the disgraceful Moveon.org ad in the New York Times which called General Petreaus a traitor, Rudy Giuliani’s campaign followed with its own ad bashing Hillary.

The latest from pundit-land is “no” since up to 50% of Americans say they will definitely not vote for her.
But for those of us who have watched her public appearances over time, from speeches to debates, the answer isn’t so clear.
Here’s a good analogy: If you’ve seen the original Rocky movie on DVD (or VHS), you may recall a scene where Apollo Creed, the heavyweight champion, (continue reading post »)
Newt, Evangelicals, and the Middle East

If you live or work in our nation’s capital and were anywhere near its Convention Center last night, you might have wondered what were thousands of people doing with all those American and Israeli flags.
They were a part of a conference being held by Christians United for Israel, a group started by Rev. John Hagee, a charismatic (in both senses of the word) preacher from San Antonio.
While evangelicals are hardly unanimous on their theological views of Israel, (continue reading post »)
NAACP Convention: A Tale of Two Men

Last week, the NAACP held its annual convention in Detroit and, true to form, chairman Julian Bond in his opening remarks uttered something breathtakingly asinine. He accused Uncle Sam of “lynching” blacks in New Orleans by essentially failing to find a magic wand to wave over the city and make its post-Katrina ills go away.
Truth be told, Katrina merely highlighted New Orleans’ pre-existing problems — namely (continue reading post »)
