Environmentalists Call for Clear-Cutting Forests

Published by Rod D. Martin April 10th, 2007

Brit Hume on Fox News just reported moments ago a new report from the National Academy of Sciences which claims that pine forests are a leading contributor to global warming. Their solution? Cut them all down.

You just can’t make this stuff up.

The “brilliant” climate scientists in question believe that only tropical rain forests help with global warming (by absorbing carbon dioxide); pine forests, by contrast, just shield the ground from sunlight, thus preventing the snow from reflecting more of it back into space. Or something else stupid like that.

Not that it has to make sense. The end result will be a bunch of tree-huggers cutting down high altitude, old growth forests. And if we didn’t have to stop them from destroying the Earth to “save” it, that would be the funniest sight of the decade.

UPDATE: Thanks to NateDawg for fleshing out some of the details on this which I missed while laughing at these morons.

  1. Wow. What ever happened to “People are bad for the environment” and “Let Nature take care of herself” and stuff like that…

Besides… Don’t pine needles take in carbon dioxide as well? Maybe not to the extent a broad leaf tree does, but…

  2. “Don’t pine needles take in carbon dioxide as well?”

Yes. All green plants absorb carbon dioxide.

To derail greenhouse gas regulations, we need to get members of Congress to add amendments that will tax or otherwise penalize developers for cutting down trees to clear land for houses and shopping malls (because doing so destroys carbon sinks). This will of course turn developers against Albert Gore & Co.

  3. I don’t know why everyone is so worried. I thought that one of the foundational theories of evolution stated that “the strong will survive.” If we are mere animals, fighting for survival, then we a) should let polar bears be extinct and b) let mother nature take it’s toll on mankind. If mankind destroys itself, then our race is only helping to complete the circle of life. Right, Elton?
