Conservative Talk

"[I]f circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude, that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little if at all inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their rights and those of their fellow citizens. "

Hillary: Socialize Big Oil

Published by Rod D. Martin February 2nd, 2007

There’s a reason the American left sympathizes so strongly with foreign socialists like Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Mikhail Gorbachev, et al.: they are socialists too!

Americans seem oblivious to that idea, as if it just couldn’t be. But they’re not going to stay oblivious very long while Hillary “Let me confiscate the entire health care system” Clinton is out showing her colors.

As she just did. In this video, Hillary says straight-up — to the Democrat National Committee’s winter meeting — that she means to confiscate all the profits of the big oil companies to put into a new government program.

If she can do it to them, she can and will certainly do it to you. Welcome to the workers’ paradise, comrade.

(Oh, and for the Christians and Jews out there, a gold star and some serious recognition to the best essay on why the 10th Commandment is essential to a free society.)

  1. Well… it’s possible she’s speaking more theoretically (I want to put those profits to a “good use”) then seriously (Nationalize the oil companies). In either case, not necessarily good. So long as the public demands alternative fuel sources, we can assume (unless the free market suddenly went defunct) that somebody somewhere is scrambling to fill that gap. Perhaps the oil companies (do profit figures come before or after R&D costs are subtracted?), perhaps other groups.

In any case, putting that cash in the government’s hands is likely the worst option, as it’ll likely lead to a very small amount of that cash getting to the R&D people and their projects. Further, they won’t be nearly as driven because they’ll be guaranteed a tidy bit of funding coming in, success or no.

All seriousness aside, I think I’d sooner vote for Osama bin - Ladin for president then Hillary. He wouldn’t be any worse, and it’d be easier to convince people to revolt…

  2. Like senator Biden, I am sure Hillary’s staff is devising ways to spin this obvious verbal blunder. Its unlikely that she is proposing a Chavez style (Putin style) nationalization of the oil companies, but the clear fact remains that she view profits of individuals and corporations as free for the taking. I expect that she will not use the same logic when trying to win back the Hollywood left from the Obama camp. If there were ever a case of undeserved income, it would be found there.

What Hillary’s comment should do is wake up all of corporate America. During her husband’s re-election campaign, business leaders were determined to play it safe by contributing to both sides of the political spectrum. Even if the ratio was 70-30, for republicans, one must now reconsider the 30% given to democrats (democratics?) that think as Hillary does.

We are already seeing the impact of the government meddling in the energy sector. Ethanol legislation has begun to push up the price of corn. Fine, if you’re a corn farmer, but now I have to listen to news stories about riots in Mexico over the cost of tortillas and complaints from “Joe six-pack”, that beef prices are going up. Go figure? The same people that complain that gas and steak prices are too high berate the War on Terror because average Americans aren’t sacrificing.

Ethanol is at best a cost neutral alternative. As evidence continues to come out, flaws continue to surface. But the political tide is already moving. (A number of republicans are also to blame). Most of the nation is not ready for Ethanol blends either in transporting it or storage in underground tanks. Have no fear though, Toyota and Honda will be ready to supply the nation with E-85 cars leaving Detroit in the dust.

The fact remains that America’s education system not only fails to teach free-market capitalism, but is openly hostile to it. I was personally shocked to find the majority of fellow MBA students who embraced socialism. Explaining to voters that profits are a good thing should be elementary. Yet the inability to argue against the minimum wage increases makes me wonder if we have elected voices that are up to the task. What we need to fear is not Hillary’s comments, but the vast numbers of people who cheer when they hear them.
